Practice Transformation through Value-Based Analytics

Conference Correspondent — October 16, 2020

As of January 2020, there were 138 practices and 10 commercial payers participating in the value-based Oncology Care Model (OCM) being piloted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation. OCM is “Medicare’s first true focus on creating an advanced alternative payment model for a subspecialty, and it is likely to create a template for what they might do afterward,” said Basit Chaudhry, MD, PhD, CEO and Founder of Tuple Health, in the first of several webcasts during the Association for Value-Based Cancer Care (AVBCC) 10th Annual Summit that will focus on value-based contracting.

The session featured perspectives from 2 of the top-performing OCM practices—Florida Cancer Specialists, which cares for approximately 10% of all patients covered by the OCM model, and Northwest Medical Specialists—as well as New Mexico Cancer Center, an early pioneer in value-based care.

Dr Chaudhry explained how many cancers that were expected to be of high concern in a risk-based model have not turned out to be an issue. “We were very concerned about AML and melanoma, given that they are incredibly high cost cancers with small volumes.” he said. “They have turned out to not be as high-risk, while other cancers, like high-risk prostate cancer, have turned out to be much more of an issue. This is an area where quantifying risk through data is incredibly important, otherwise you can waste a lot of resources and energy if you don’t know what to focus on.”

Participants also shared their expectations for Oncology Care First (OCF) Model, CMS’ planned successor to the OCM model, which expires in 2021. “We’re going to see considerably more risk structured in OCF than we saw in OCM,” Dr. Chaudhry said.
